Helmets - Use Your Noggin to Select the Right Helmet for Your Child

Yes, there is a vast variety of helmets offered today, but wearing a helmet is not only warmer and more comfortable than a hat when skiing, but offers more style as well. As far as biking is concerned, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) says that wearing a bicycle helmet reduces the risk of serious head and brain injury by approximately 85 percent.

Following are a few tips to help you find the right helmet for your child:

  • Buy a helmet that meets the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) safety standard.
  • Select a helmet that is just the right size for your child. Don't attempt to buy a helmet that your child will "grow into" because it is simply not safe.
  • Ensure a proper fit. The pads should be flush against the cheeks and forehead. The back of the helmet should not touch the nape of the neck.
  • Make sure the helmet is not so tight that it will cause headaches or tugging on your child's hair when they turn their head.
  • Check that the goggles fit properly within it; not awkwardly outside of the helmet.
  • Upgrade helmets every few years since plastics and composites break down over time.
  • Replace any of them that has been involved in a crash.

A good helmet fit is as important as wearing one. When shopping for a helmet for your child, allow enough time to get a proper helmet fit. Once one is selected, secure the adjustments so it is ready for the next ride. And, set an example for your child by wearing a helmet as well.
